What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing is the on-demand delivery of compute power, database storage, applications, and other IT resources through a cloud services platform via the internet with pay-as-you-go pricing.

How Does Cloud Computing Work?

Cloud computing provides a simple way to access servers, storage, databases and a broad set of application services over the Internet. A Cloud services platform such as Amazon Web Services owns and maintains the network-connected hardware required for these application services, while you provision and use what you need via a web application.

How Does Cloud Computing Work?

  • Six Advantages and Benefits of Cloud Computing

How to Create and Activate an AWS Account?

Simple procedures for building and initiating a new AWS account is given below. Follow our steps and make it easier.

Step 1: Firstly, move on to the Amazon Web Services home page.

Move on to the amazon web services home page

Step 2: Then select the option specifying to “Create an AWS Account”.

Step 3: In case, you’ve already signed in to AWS, then you’ll get a prompt stating that Sign In to the Console.

Step 4: Now enter your account information and then tap Continue to proceed further.

Enter your account information

Note: Look to that the account information that you enter is accurate and without any deviation from the original, in case, the details you furnish are incorrect then you’ll not be able to sign in to your account. On the off chance, if you want to create a new AWS account, then choose Sign in to a different account, now you’ll be displayed with “create a new AWS account” option to continue.

Step 5: Then choose Personal or Professional as per your usage preference.

Note: Both personal and professional accounts have similar functionality and features, just go through the AWS Customer Agreement and then click Create Account and Continue.

If Professional, enter enterprise details to continue.

Enter enterprise details to continue

Enter your address

If Personal, enter your personal information to proceed.

Enter your personal information

Enter your personal address

Step 6: On creating your AWS account successfully, move on to add your preferred payment method.

On choosing the Payment method option, you’ll be displayed with a payment information page, where you’ll have to enter your payment method information and then select secure submit. To make it reliable, your AWS account will debit a little of your amount (Eg: 2₹ in Indian Currency) from your Debit/Credit Card. And, this amount will be credited back within 3 working days.

To set up the same address details on the contact form, you’ll have to fill the necessities in the form below.

Add your Preferred payment method

Add your address

Verify your address

Step 7: To verify your mobile number, follow the below-enlisted criteria.

Verify your mobile number

  • Firstly, choose either Text message (SMS) or a Voice call to verify your account.
  • Then select the appropriate country code or region code from the displayed list.
  • Also, enter a phone number via which you can be reached around a couple of minutes.
  • Then fill the captcha code to proceed.
  • Once you’re ready with all the information, tap “Contact me”. Within a few seconds, you get either a call or text message as your preference from an automated system.

Note: If you have opted for SMS verification, then select Send SMS instead of Contact me.

Step 8: Now enter the PIN you receive through call or text and click Continue.

Enter the pin

Once all these steps are carried out without any deviations, then you’ll get an email confirmation on account creation. From now on, you can sign in to your AWS account with email id and password you have furnished. Activate your account to begin using the benefits of the AWS account.

Step 9: Then continue with choosing an AWS Support Plan.

Continue with choosing an aws support plan

On choosing the support plan option, you’ll be provided with several plans, if you are going to use it just for training purpose, then choose the basic plan to continue.

After selecting a plan, you’ll have to wait for about 24 hours to get account activated confirmation message.

Once your account is activated, you can start using your AWS account with your credentials.

You’ll get an email confirmation once your AWS account is fully activated so that you get access to use all AWS services.

Step 10: Finally, you’ll get an option saying “Sign in to the console” where you have to enter your details and start building your enterprise on the cloud for easy usage.

Sign in to the console

Step 11: Experiencing a delay in account activation? Then troubleshoot it with the following steps.

The account activation might take around 24 hours, if the time exceeds more than the estimated time, then do the following.

  • Check whether you have completed the account activation process without missing any mandatory fields, at times, you might have closed the sign-up window without providing all the required data. In this case, you’ll have to move onto https://aws-portal.amazon.com/gp/aws/developer/registration/index.html and sign in with your credentials to complete the activation process.
  • Check whether you have provided prompt information on the payment information page. Look to AWS Billing and Cost Management console and rectify if any errors found.
  • In some cases your financial institution might have rejected the payment methods from AWS, in this case, you’ll have to contact your financial institution and ask them to approve your AWS request.

Note: You’ll not be charged for the authorization requests from AWS. However, a little amount like 2₹ in Indian currency might deduct which is refundable.

  • Or else, check your email for AWS account confirmation message, if AWS requires any additional information to activate your account, then complete those details.
  • Try activating your AWS account from a different browser.
  • In case you’ve tried all the troubleshooting steps, but still, your AWS account is not activated, then choose AWS Supporter contact AWS helpline.

Note: Please do not provide any sensitive information like credit card numbers and more at any point in the activation process.

  • Curl http://169.254.169.254/latest/meta-data/

Security Groups

All inbound traffic is blocked by default

All outbound traffic is allowed by default Changes are applied immediately one SG can be applied to many Ec2 Instances one Ec2 instance can have many SG.

Security groups are stateful. can not block specific ip address can specify allow rules not deny rules.

Volumes & Snapshots

  • Volumes exists on EBS(Elastic Block Store)
  • Snapshots exists in S3
  • Snapshots are point in time copies of volumes and incremental.
  • First snapshot will take some time to create.

  • Launch Permissions that control which AWS accounts can use the AMI
  • Block Device Mapping specifies which volumes would attach to the instance when it launches.

AMI

  • AMI’s are Regional, you can only launch an AMI from the region in which it stored.
  • But we can copy AMI’s to other regions through console and API.

EBS (Elastic Block Store)

  • Amazon EBS volumes allow us to create storage volumes and attach them to Amazon Ec2 instances.once attached, you can create a file system on top of thses volumes.run a database.
  • EBS volumes are placed in Specific AZ, where they are automatically replicated to protect Single point of failiure.

EBS Types

  • General Purpose — SSD(GP2)Ratio of 3 iops per gb with upto 10,000

  • HDD,cold-)SC1) — less frequently accessed data
  • HDD, MAgnetic — standard-cheap,infrequently accessed storage we cannot mount 1 EBS volume to multiple Ec2 instances.

EBS and Instance store volumes

  • Instance store volumes are called Ephermal storage
  • Instance store volumes cannot be stopped.if the host fails all data wiil be lost
  • EBS backed instance can be stopped
  • We can reboot both and will not loose any data.
  • By Default both ROOT volumes will be deleted on Termination, however with EBS volumes we can use “delete on termination” unchecked and keep the volume.

EBS vs Instance Store

  • AMI’s are catogorized either EBS backed or Instance store backed.
  • EBS Backed : The root device for an instance launched from the AMI is an AMAzon EBS volume created from an Amazon EBS snapshot.

Instance Store:  The root device for an instance launched from an AMI is an instance store volume created from a template stored in Amazon S3.
